Default Phone GPS - is it really useful? - 01-26-2009, 05:32 AM

Hi all,

I've been wanting to get a GPS for when I drive, and I've been thinking about a Garmin Nuvi, but they are kind of expensive. I've also been considering getting an iPhone, which I've heard has a pretty good GPS feature.

So, I was thinking I might be able to kill two birds with one stone and get the iPhone, and use it for my GPS. But I'm not sure that I'd be able to use the iPhone's GPS effectively while driving.

Is the iPhone's GPS worth it as a mobile GPS, or should I get the Garmin and wait on the phone?

I personally have the iPhone and can say that its GPS functionality definitely isn't snappy enough to be used as a full-fledged navigation system. I'd highly recommend a Garmin or TomTom unit, as you can find many on Amazon.com for under $150 currently.
