Do-Dodonpa is essentially steel roller coaster, located at Fuji-Q Highland in Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi, Japan, that uses compressed air to propel its trains. It’s currently the world’s fastest accelerating as it can hit 111.9 mph in a mere 1.6-seconds. Unfortunately, it was temporarily shut down after four guests reported suffering broken bones. On the bright side, the attraction is undergoing a safety overhaul to ensure these accidents do not happen again. Read more for two videos showing what the roller coaster is all about.

The compressed air gives riders an acceleration of 32 meters per second per second (6,300 ft/s/min), letting them experience up to 3.3 g. For comparison, astronauts only experience 3 g at liftoff. Prior to Do-Dodonpa’s opening, there were two roller coasters that achieved the 100 miles per hour (161 km/h) barrier, but as of 2020, there are now six, including Superman: Escape from Krypton, Red Force, Top Thrill Dragster and Kingda Ka.

If they had reported them earlier and taken appropriate actions, some accidents could have been prevented,” said Kotaro Nagasaki, Yamanashi’s governor, criticizing operators of Fuji-Q Highland.
