NVIDIA 3D Artist Lorenzo Drago Japan Etchu-Daimon Station UE5
Japan is known for many things, including this giant humanoid robot and their train stations. NVIDIA 3D artist caused a stir online when his video of Japan’s Etchū-Daimon Station recreated in Unreal Engine 5 went viral in May. Now he has uploaded a breakdown video showing what went into this amazing photorealistic creation.

First, Drago needed to camera match in the fSpy open-source software, a process that basically approximates the focal length, orientation and position of the camera in 3D space, based on the defined control points chosen from his Etchū-Daimon reference image. Next, Blender software was used for the initial blockout, or a rough 3D draft built with simple shapes without details or polished art assets. Once the textures were created in Adobe Substance 3D Painter, they were then exported and applied the textures to the models inside Unreal Engine 5.

For a 3D artist, probably the majority of the work, excluding the planning phases, requires GPU acceleration. Being able to work on scenes and objects with materials and lighting rendered in real time saves a lot of time and headaches compared to wireframe or unshaded modes,” said Drago.
