Thumbs up Orange reveals LG watchphone price… and it ain’t cheap - 09-03-2009, 07:29 AM

Way back in February this year I blogged about the LG GD910 touchscreen watchphone, when details such as a release date and pricing information had not been released.

At the time I was unsure about the purpose of the device – it struck me as nothing more than a gimmick and I couldn’t really see a market for it. Now that I’ve seen the pricing details I’m even more sure that it’s a dud product…

The watchphone goes on sale on August 27 for a hefty £500 on a pay-as-you-go deal and will only be available at the Orange store on Bond Street. Orange is clearly expecting heavy demand as the watch is being sold on a first-come-first-serve basis and will limit sales to one per customer.

A limited number will also be made available via the Orange website from mid-September, says Orange.

To me £500 sounds like a lot of money for what you get, although it is less than the £1,000 price some had predicted and also less that it cost when released in France earlier in August. The price is only a short-term offer, however, so get in quick if you want one as Orange may well raise the price later.

Its price puts it level with the iPhone on a pay-as-you-go deal but of course for that you get to surf the web, use email and plenty of other business-critical things. The LG GD910? Well, you can make calls. Oh, and it has video calling. On a 1.4-inch screen.

The BBC’s Rory Cellan-Jones managed to get his hands on one and also isn’t too impressed with it and the Boy Genius Report isn’t too sure either.

I accept that the technology involved here is impressive, but we are talking about a lot of money just so you can pretend to be James Bond for a bit. I don’t see a huge market for this, and certainly not within the enterprise.

Who would buy such a thing? Techwise, its amazing fitting everything into a watch sized gadget, but for that price? I'll definitely have to pass.
